Auto SR expands to Intel Core Ultra Series 3 PCs

Microsoft has expanded Automatic Super Resolution, the Windows-level game upscaler known as Auto SR, to Copilot+ PCs based on Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors. The change gives Intel Panther Lake systems access to an NPU-assisted upscaling path that can work without a developer adding DLSS, FSR or XeSS support to an individual game.

Auto SR works by letting a game render at a lower input resolution and then using the PC’s NPU to reconstruct a higher-resolution output. Microsoft says the feature can apply to thousands of existing games because it is integrated at the Windows level rather than requiring per-game super-resolution integration.

Core Ultra Series 3 raises the supported input resolution to 1080p

Microsoft generally recommends an 800p input for Auto SR on Copilot+ PCs. On Intel Core Ultra Series 3 systems, however, the company says Auto SR now supports input resolutions up to 1080p. That does not mean every game should be rendered at 1080p before upscaling: the useful input depends on the display resolution, graphics workload and the performance target.

The distinction matters because an upscaler can only recover performance by reducing the work performed at the game’s internal rendering resolution. A higher input resolution can preserve more source detail but also leaves less GPU work to save. Auto SR therefore remains a quality-versus-performance control rather than a free performance multiplier.

Microsoft still prefers a game-integrated upscaler when one is available

Auto SR’s main advantage is coverage: it can improve games that do not have a modern integrated super-resolution option. Microsoft recommends using a game’s own upscaler when one is available, because technologies integrated into the rendering pipeline have access to game-specific information that a system-level solution does not.

There are other practical limits. Microsoft says Auto SR currently targets gaming closer to a 60 FPS cap and is investigating 90–120 FPS scenarios. Because the NPU shares a device power budget with the CPU and GPU, some systems can also see a small frame-rate effect depending on their power profile. User-interface elements are processed by the system-level upscaler as well, which can make fine text or HUD details look less clean in some games.

The expansion gives the NPU a conventional PC gaming job

For Core Ultra Series 3 laptops and compact PCs, Auto SR is one of the clearer examples of the NPU doing work that directly affects a traditional game rather than a separate generative-AI application. The GPU still renders the game and remains the primary graphics processor; the NPU is being used for the reconstruction stage.

Microsoft lists DirectX 10 and later games among the intended coverage and highlights titles including Control, DOOM: The Dark Ages, Frostpunk 2, The Outer Worlds 2 and Rainbow Six Siege. Actual usefulness will still vary by game. GPU-bound titles running at high enough output resolutions have more room to benefit than games already limited by the CPU or comfortably above the desired frame rate.
