Windows 11 26H2 Begins Controlled Rollout as a Small Enablement Package

Microsoft is rolling out Windows 11 26H2 to eligible 24H2 and 25H2 PCs, using a small enablement package and compatibility safeguard holds.

Windows 11 26H2 is now in controlled rollout

Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H2, also called the Windows 11 2026 Update, is now available through a controlled feature rollout for eligible PCs running Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2. Users who want earlier access can enable “Get the latest updates as soon as they're available” in Windows Update; the download-and-install option appears when Microsoft considers the device eligible.

This is not an all-at-once release. Microsoft says availability will expand over time and that it may place safeguard holds on PCs where a known compatibility issue could affect the upgrade. A missing 26H2 offer therefore does not necessarily mean a PC is unsupported.

The enablement package is possible because 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share a servicing foundation

Microsoft describes 26H2 as using the same servicing foundation as Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2. For many eligible devices, the move to 26H2 is therefore delivered as a small enablement package rather than a conventional full operating-system upgrade, with Microsoft describing the process as a minimal download, quick installation and a single restart.

That also explains why 26H2 is not a clean break containing an entirely separate set of features. Microsoft says many capabilities associated with the release were already delivered gradually through monthly servicing updates. The annual feature update consolidates and enables those improvements while establishing a new support lifecycle.

26H2 includes security, recovery, File Explorer and management changes

Microsoft's current 26H2 documentation lists changes across security, deployment, recovery, accessibility and productivity. Examples include Administrator protection, built-in Sysmon, the ability to toggle Smart App Control without a clean Windows installation, passkey credential-manager integration, Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security support for compatible peripheral fingerprint sensors, and post-quantum cryptography API support.

The release also includes Point-in-time restore, Quick machine recovery improvements, File Explorer and Windows Search changes, a redesigned Start menu, additional taskbar controls, NPU visibility in Task Manager and Windows Update behavior intended to reduce restart disruption. Availability of individual experiences can still depend on hardware, edition, policy or staged feature rollout.

Commercial PCs get several previously controlled features by default

For commercial organizations, Microsoft says 26H2 enables several capabilities that had previously been introduced under temporary commercial control. These include Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions and File Explorer navigation and usability improvements.

Existing administrator-configured policies continue to be respected. The move to 26H2 should therefore not be read as Microsoft overriding every enterprise policy simply because a feature becomes part of the default release baseline.

Installing 26H2 resets the Windows servicing clock

Windows 11 26H2 continues Microsoft's annual feature-update cadence. Microsoft lists 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education, with the lifecycle starting from the new release rather than inheriting the remaining support period of the previous Windows version.

For PC owners, the practical decision is not to force the update around Microsoft's compatibility controls. If Windows Update does not yet offer 26H2, Microsoft's rollout model explicitly allows for staged availability and safeguard holds. Waiting for the supported offer preserves the compatibility checks built into the rollout.
