Windows 11 26H2 Starts Rolling Out as a Small Enablement Package

Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2026 Update, version 26H2, on September 29, 2026. It is now available for eligible PCs running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, but Microsoft is using a controlled rollout rather than offering it to every compatible PC at the same moment.

Users who want earlier access can open Settings > Windows Update and enable Get the latest updates as soon as they're available. Microsoft says the download-and-install option appears once a device is eligible, and safeguard holds may delay 26H2 on systems where a known compatibility problem could affect the upgrade.

The technically important change is the servicing model. Microsoft says Windows 11 26H2 shares a servicing branch and underlying codebase with 24H2 and 25H2. Features required for 26H2 have therefore already been delivered to many PCs through previous monthly servicing and can be activated with a lightweight enablement package.

That makes the transition closer to installing a monthly update than performing a traditional full operating-system upgrade: Microsoft describes a small download and a quick restart for eligible systems. It does not mean every PC receives 26H2 immediately, because rollout eligibility and safeguard holds still apply.

Installing 26H2 starts a new support lifecycle for the annual Windows feature update. Microsoft specifies 24 months of support for Home and Pro editions and 36 months for Enterprise and Education editions.

That is particularly relevant to PCs still on Windows 11 24H2 Home or Pro as those editions approach the end of their servicing window. The lifecycle benefit is separate from the feature set: moving to 26H2 establishes a newer supported baseline even where the visible feature difference is modest.

Microsoft says selected features and enhancements that initially shipped disabled by default in Windows 11 25H2 are enabled by default in 26H2. That fits the enablement-package model: the release is partly a change in which already-serviced capabilities are activated rather than a replacement of the operating system's entire codebase.

Microsoft's announcement does not claim that every 24H2 or 25H2 PC has identical feature availability on day one. Controlled Feature Rollout and compatibility safeguards can still make timing differ between machines, so the absence of a 26H2 offer in Windows Update is not by itself evidence that a compatible PC is broken.

Windows 11 26H2 is also available through enterprise management channels including Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center, although Microsoft notes that downloads in the admin center and similar channels can be delayed.

Microsoft recommends that organizations begin with targeted deployments to validate applications, devices and business-critical workflows before expanding broadly. Existing update rings, policies and deployment practices remain applicable, which should make 26H2 a servicing transition rather than a new management architecture.
