Valve Moves NVIDIA Support Into the SteamOS Main Tree
Valve says NVIDIA support is now enabled in the main SteamOS development tree for some GPU generations, but performance still trails the current state of the art.

NVIDIA support has reached Valve’s main SteamOS development tree
Valve has moved its NVIDIA graphics work a meaningful step closer to mainstream SteamOS support. Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais says the NVIDIA driver is now enabled in the main SteamOS development tree, allowing some GPU generations to initialize and produce a display output.
That is an integration milestone, not a finished GeForce release. Griffais also says NVIDIA support remains one of Valve’s top priorities and that there is still a performance gap between the current SteamOS implementation and the state of the art. Valve has not announced a date when broad NVIDIA GPU support will be considered ready for ordinary SteamOS users.
Why NVIDIA is a much bigger compatibility target than a niche Linux feature
SteamOS has expanded beyond the original Steam Deck, and Valve has been improving support for third-party handhelds, newer PC platforms and discrete graphics. Wider NVIDIA compatibility matters because it determines whether SteamOS can realistically become an option for a much larger pool of existing gaming desktops rather than primarily systems built around hardware already well served by Valve’s current graphics stack.
The operating-system problem is also different from simply proving that an NVIDIA GPU can run Linux. A console-style SteamOS installation needs graphics initialization, Gamescope, suspend and resume behavior, updates, display handling and game performance to work together predictably. Getting a card to display an image in the development tree clears an important early barrier without proving that the complete gaming experience is ready.
SteamOS 3.9 shows the wider platform work happening around it
The NVIDIA comments arrive alongside active SteamOS 3.9 development. The current preview line rebases the Linux kernel to 7.2, adds preliminary hibernation support, improves virtual-machine graphics support and changes the default Wi-Fi backend for new installations. Valve is therefore broadening the operating system at several layers while NVIDIA graphics support develops in parallel.
Those preview changes should not be confused with a declaration that NVIDIA support is finished in SteamOS 3.9. Valve’s own framing remains developmental: some generations can light up, while the graphics team continues closing the performance gap.
The performance gap is now the part to watch
The most useful signal in Griffais’s update is that Valve is talking about performance after reaching basic integration. For a gaming-focused operating system, functional display output is only the starting point; frame rates, frame pacing, power behavior and feature compatibility determine whether users can switch operating systems without accepting a large practical regression.
Valve has not quantified the remaining gap, named every supported GPU generation or promised a completion window, so there is no defensible percentage to attach to the work yet. The next meaningful milestones will be broader hardware coverage and evidence that SteamOS can approach the mature NVIDIA gaming experience closely enough for Valve to expose the support to ordinary users.
