The partnership spans both wafer fabrication and chip packaging
Nexperia and Tata Electronics announced a strategic semiconductor partnership on September 17, 2026 that reaches across front-end wafer fabrication, back-end assembly and test, and longer-term technology collaboration. Unlike a reported negotiation, the framework is confirmed by both companies in matching announcements.
The most concrete manufacturing plan is for Nexperia’s MOSFET portfolio. The companies say they are laying the groundwork to produce those devices at Tata Electronics’ upcoming 300 mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat. Separately, Nexperia discrete semiconductor products are planned for assembly and test at Tata Electronics’ packaging facility in Jagiroad, Assam.
| Area | Location | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Front-end wafer fabrication | Dholera, Gujarat | Groundwork for production of Nexperia MOSFET products at Tata’s upcoming 300 mm fab |
| Assembly and test | Jagiroad, Assam | Collaboration on packaging and testing Nexperia discrete semiconductor products |
| Technology and ecosystem development | Broader partnership | A framework for technology development, research and semiconductor-ecosystem initiatives |
Dholera and Jagiroad perform different jobs
The two Indian sites should not be treated as interchangeable chip plants. Dholera is Tata Electronics’ planned commercial wafer fab, where semiconductor devices are formed on 300 mm wafers. Jagiroad is the company’s semiconductor assembly-and-test operation, which handles later manufacturing stages after wafer fabrication.
That distinction matters when assessing manufacturing capacity. The announcement establishes a path toward Nexperia wafer production at Dholera and a separate packaging/test relationship at Jagiroad; it does not say that Jagiroad will fabricate MOSFET wafers or that Dholera is already in volume production for Nexperia.
The first named product family is MOSFETs, not advanced AI processors
Nexperia describes itself as a supplier of essential discrete, power and analog semiconductors, and the companies specifically name its MOSFET portfolio for the Dholera manufacturing work. MOSFETs are fundamental power-switching devices used across electronics, including computing power supplies, voltage regulation, industrial systems and automotive electronics.
The announcement does not identify an advanced logic node, AI accelerator, CPU, GPU, DRAM or NAND product moving into the partnership. It is therefore more accurate to read the deal as an expansion of essential semiconductor manufacturing and packaging capability than as evidence that India is immediately gaining leading-edge PC or AI processor production through Nexperia.
Tata is building a broader semiconductor supply chain around the same sites
The Nexperia agreement arrived during a wider set of Tata Electronics semiconductor announcements at SEMICON India 2026. On the same date, Tata announced a partnership with Fujifilm around semiconductor materials for Dholera and an agreement with Besi covering advanced packaging equipment and technology for Jagiroad.
Tata says its Dholera fab and Jagiroad assembly-and-test facility represent a combined investment of $14 billion. That company figure describes Tata’s two facilities, not the value of the Nexperia partnership itself. Neither Nexperia nor Tata disclosed financial terms, dedicated Nexperia capacity, production volume, or a start date for Nexperia products in the September 17 announcement.
Supply-chain diversification is the immediate industry significance
Both companies frame the partnership around manufacturing flexibility and supply-chain resilience. For Nexperia, the framework adds a prospective Indian manufacturing and packaging path to a business that ships large volumes of power, discrete and analog components. For Tata, it gives the new facilities an announced global semiconductor customer and technology partner spanning more than one manufacturing stage.
For the PC hardware supply chain, the significance is indirect but real: power and discrete semiconductors are basic inputs across power supplies, motherboards, graphics cards, peripherals and other electronics. The announcement does not establish lower component prices, increased PC production, or a measurable change in near-term availability, so those outcomes should not be inferred from the partnership alone.
What remains unknown after the announcement
The companies have not published a Nexperia production start date at Dholera, a wafer-volume commitment, dedicated capacity, financial terms, or a complete list of products to be assembled and tested in Jagiroad. Their technology-development language is also broad and does not identify a specific future process node or product roadmap.
Those missing details are important because “laying the groundwork” describes a manufacturing plan rather than completed volume production. The next milestones to watch are qualification and production schedules, named product expansions, capacity commitments, and evidence that the Dholera fab has moved from construction and process preparation into commercial output for customers such as Nexperia.
