The S5 turns five NVMe drives into a silent compact NAS

Minisforum has now detailed the retail-oriented S5, a compact all-flash NAS built around five M.2 2280 NVMe slots and passive cooling. The company first showed the S5 concept earlier in 2026, but its current product material identifies the processor as Intel’s Core 3 304 and presents the machine as a fanless storage system for creators, home labs and media libraries.

The defining tradeoff is straightforward: the S5 removes both mechanical hard drives and a system fan. That can make it attractive beside a workstation or in a living room, but silence does not make the storage itself thermally free. Five active NVMe SSDs and a processor still generate heat, so sustained performance will depend on the chassis, SSD selection, ambient temperature and workload.

10GbE is the practical ceiling before the SSDs are

A five-drive NVMe array can offer far more aggregate flash bandwidth than a single 10GbE network link can expose to one conventional client. Raw 10GbE line rate is 10 gigabits per second, or 1.25 GB/s before Ethernet, TCP/IP and file-sharing overhead. The value of multiple SSDs is therefore not simply “five times faster file copies.”

Multiple drives can instead provide capacity, redundancy options and concurrency for several clients or local workloads. The S5 also includes 2.5GbE alongside 10GbE, which gives administrators a second wired interface for a separate network path or a slower client. Actual throughput will depend on storage layout, protocol, SSD behavior, network hardware and software configuration.

The Core 3 304 is aimed at efficient always-on work rather than workstation compute

The S5’s processor choice fits the storage-first design. Minisforum positions the system for file access, Docker and local services, databases, media libraries and small-team storage rather than as a high-end compute workstation. That distinction matters when comparing it with larger NAS systems carrying substantially faster CPUs or dedicated accelerators.

For a home-lab buyer, the useful question is therefore not whether the S5 has the fastest processor in a NAS. It is whether its combination of 10GbE, five flash bays, compact dimensions and passive cooling matches the intended services without requiring more CPU headroom than the platform provides.

Capacity claims still depend on the SSDs you install

Current launch reporting puts maximum raw flash capacity at 40 TB when all five bays are populated with 8 TB SSDs. Raw capacity is not the same as usable protected capacity: RAID or another redundancy scheme can reserve the equivalent of one or more drives, while filesystem formatting, snapshots and over-provisioning can reduce available space further.

That is also why the S5 should be evaluated as a NAS platform rather than a prebuilt promise of a particular storage result. Buyers still need to choose SSDs with appropriate endurance and thermal behavior, decide how much redundancy they need, and make sure the rest of the network can exploit the 10GbE interface.

Pricing remains the missing part of the value equation

Minisforum’s current product material establishes the hardware direction, while recent launch reporting points to mid-October availability. A final price is not yet established in the sources used for this report, so Core Tech Tips is not treating the S5 as a value recommendation before retail pricing and regional configurations are clear.

The concept is nevertheless unusual enough to matter for PC and home-lab users: it combines the latency and concurrency advantages of an all-NVMe NAS with 10GbE and no system fan. Whether that is preferable to a conventional HDD or actively cooled NVMe NAS will come down to price, required capacity, sustained thermals and how much the buyer values silence.
