Microsoft Makes WSL Containers Generally Available on Windows

Microsoft made WSL containers generally available on September 29, 2026. The feature adds a Windows-native container workflow on top of Windows Subsystem for Linux, with the wslc.exe command-line interface and a built-in container.exe alias for familiar container commands.

Users can get the current release through wsl --update or Microsoft's latest WSL release. Microsoft also exposes a WSL containers API so native Windows applications can start and manage Linux containers programmatically, including local AI and cloud-native development workflows.

The general-availability build expands the command surface beyond basic container creation and execution. New commands include container restart and container cp, while health checks, mount support and configurable stop timeouts make longer-running development workloads easier to manage.

Networking also gets explicit connect and disconnect commands plus arbitrary driver options when creating networks. The wslc events command streams container activity in real time, and wslc system info provides a consolidated view of the environment.

The release is not positioned only as a developer convenience. Microsoft Defender for Endpoint's WSL plugin can now surface process, file and network activity from WSL containers and associate that activity with the Windows host.

Microsoft Intune adds policy controls that can disable WSL containers entirely or restrict image pulls to approved registries. Those controls matter for organizations that want Linux container workflows on developer PCs without creating a separate unmanaged container environment.

General availability does not mean the container stack is feature-complete. Microsoft says Compose is the top requested WSL containers feature and is working toward wsl compose up using existing compose.yaml files without modification, but it has not announced a release date.

Microsoft is also investigating broader WSL improvements around networking and cross-OS file performance. It says current wslc work can deliver up to twice the performance when accessing Windows files from Linux environments, but that figure is a Microsoft-reported platform claim rather than an independent Core Tech Tips benchmark.

The GA announcement names several integrations already adopting the runtime. VS Code Dev Containers can use wslc as a default driver, the VS Code container extension supports wslc, and Aspire can treat WSL containers as a first-class container runtime.

For Windows developers, the practical change is that WSL now has a Microsoft-supported container interface of its own rather than serving only as the Linux substrate beneath other container products. Docker and other container runtimes remain separate products; Microsoft's announcement does not claim WSL containers universally replace them.
