Microsoft Brings Snapdragon X2 Plus to 12-Inch Surface Pro and 13-Inch Surface Laptop

Microsoft has announced second-generation versions of the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. Both PCs are scheduled to become available in select markets on October 13, 2026, with the Surface Pro starting at $1,149.99 and the Surface Laptop at $1,199 in the US.

The processor change matters beyond the headline NPU figure. These are thin, fanless Windows-on-Arm machines, so the useful question is whether the newer silicon can raise graphics and sustained everyday performance without giving up the efficiency that makes this class of PC attractive. Microsoft claims up to 17% higher Office productivity performance, more than 60% faster graphics and up to 95% faster local AI inferencing on the NPU compared with the previous generations. Both machines keep their existing compact form factors while moving to 500-nit displays that Microsoft describes as 25% brighter than before. On the Surface Pro, Microsoft says the newer platform adds an extra hour of active web browsing. The 13-inch Surface Laptop is rated for up to 22.5 hours of local video playback, although that controlled figure should not be read as an all-workloads battery-life promise.

The Surface Pro also introduces Microsoft Ink Canvas, a pen-oriented app for sketching, annotation, image generation and text summarization. Microsoft says it will be preinstalled on the new Pro and available from the Microsoft Store for other supported Surface and Windows devices on October 13, so the software itself is not exclusive to buyers of this generation.

Snapdragon X2 Plus strengthens Microsoft’s commitment to Arm-based Windows PCs, but faster silicon does not erase the architecture distinction. Native Arm64 applications can take the most direct path to the hardware, while some x86 and x64 software depends on Windows translation and specialized drivers still need explicit Arm support. Buyers with niche peripherals, kernel-level utilities or older professional software should therefore verify compatibility for their own workload rather than infer it from benchmark claims.

For business buyers, Microsoft says both PCs arrive through Surface for Business on October 13 as well. The 12-inch Surface Pro will offer an optional 5G configuration for commercial customers, adding a connectivity option that was absent from the consumer-focused headline specifications.
