Marvell is using ECOC 2026 to show its next optical-interconnect generation

Marvell is showcasing a group of 2nm optical-interconnect demonstrations at ECOC 2026 in Málaga, including 400G-per-lane optical PAM4, a live 800G ZR/ZR+ pluggable with MACsec, and 1.6T ZR and coherent-lite O-band links. The company is also demonstrating a 102.4 Tbps co-packaged-optics platform as part of a broader set of 38 technology demos.

These are data-center connectivity technologies, not new consumer graphics cards, desktop network adapters or PC optical links. Marvell is positioning them for AI scale-up, scale-out and scale-across networks, where accelerator clusters and data centers need progressively denser links. The announcement confirms what Marvell plans to demonstrate; claims such as industry-first status, lower power and future scaling benefits remain Marvell claims rather than independent benchmark results.

400G per lane is the PAM4 step Marvell is tying to 3.2T modules

The 400G-per-lane optical PAM4 demonstration is the clearest generational step in the announcement. Marvell says the technology is intended to help move data-center optical connectivity toward 3.2T. That does not mean a single 400G lane is itself a 3.2T link; aggregate module bandwidth depends on the number of lanes and the surrounding electrical and optical architecture.

Marvell describes the 2nm process as part of its effort to improve bandwidth density and power efficiency. No independent power-per-bit measurement or directly comparable benchmark is included in the announcement, so those efficiency statements should be read as vendor positioning rather than measured Core Tech Tips results.

The 800G demo combines coherent optics with MACsec

Marvell says its live 800G ZR/ZR+ demonstration uses the 2nm Libra coherent DSP inside an OSFP pluggable and integrates MACsec. ZR and ZR+ are coherent optical technologies aimed at longer data-center and inter-data-center links rather than the short copper connections found inside a normal desktop PC.

Libra is not being introduced for the first time at ECOC. Marvell announced the 2nm 800G coherent DSP earlier in 2026 as part of its COLORZ coherent portfolio. The ECOC news is specifically about the live demonstration and the broader set of optical technologies shown together.

Marvell is also showing 1.6T ZR and coherent-lite links

The 1.6T demonstrations cover two related but different optical roles. Marvell lists a 1.6T ZR demonstration for coherent data-center interconnect and a 1.6T coherent-lite O-band demonstration aimed at high-bandwidth connectivity over shorter data-center distances. Both use next-generation Marvell DSP technology announced earlier this year.

The important boundary is that a demonstration is not the same thing as a volume-shipping product commitment. Marvell has announced products elsewhere in its coherent portfolio, but this ECOC release does not provide a new shipment date, customer deployment list or price for every demonstrated technology. Those details should not be inferred from booth demonstrations alone.

The 102.4 Tbps CPO platform moves optics closer to the switching silicon

Alongside the 2nm DSP demonstrations, Marvell is showing a 102.4 Tbps co-packaged-optics platform using 200G-per-lane silicon photonics. Co-packaged optics places optical connectivity close to high-bandwidth switch or accelerator silicon rather than relying only on conventional pluggable optics at the front panel.

Marvell frames CPO as one response to the reach and power challenges that appear as AI fabrics become larger and lane rates rise. The 102.4 Tbps figure describes the demonstrated platform bandwidth; it is not a consumer-PC bus speed and should not be compared directly with PCIe or a desktop GPU memory interface.

Why this matters to PC technology without being a PC product launch

AI accelerators, CPUs and memory systems increasingly depend on the network around them. Faster optical links can affect how large clusters are assembled and how much data can move between racks or facilities, which is why semiconductor companies are investing heavily in DSPs, silicon photonics and co-packaged optics alongside compute silicon.

For PC readers, the useful takeaway is architectural rather than a near-term upgrade path. These demonstrations show where data-center interconnect technology is moving as aggregate bandwidth climbs beyond current 800G and 1.6T links. They do not establish a new Ethernet standard for home PCs, a new consumer optical connector, or a performance increase for desktop GPUs.

What is confirmed and what remains a Marvell claim

Marvell has officially announced the ECOC demonstrations and published the specific technologies it intends to show. Its event page also places Marvell at ECOC 2026 in Málaga and lists presentations covering DSP trends, near-packaged optics, silicon photonics and emerging optical technologies.

The stronger superlatives and performance framing require more caution. “Industry-first” descriptions, power-efficiency advantages, bandwidth-density benefits and the claim that these technologies enable particular future AI-network scaling outcomes come from Marvell. The announcement does not provide independent comparative testing, customer deployment evidence or consumer availability, so those claims remain attributed rather than treated as independently proven results.
