KosmicKrisp Brings Conformant Vulkan 1.4 to Apple Silicon Macs

Apple silicon now has a conformant Vulkan 1.4 path
LunarG's KosmicKrisp has passed the Vulkan 1.4 Conformance Test Suite and is now listed as a Khronos-conformant Vulkan 1.4 implementation for Apple silicon. The conformant driver ships in LunarG's Vulkan SDK 1.4.363.0, released September 29, giving developers an official Vulkan 1.4 ICD for supported modern Macs rather than requiring Vulkan applications to target Metal directly.
KosmicKrisp is an open-source Mesa driver that translates Vulkan to Apple's Metal API. LunarG says it uses Metal 4 and therefore requires macOS 26 or later. It supports Apple silicon beginning with M1; Intel Macs are not supported by KosmicKrisp.
| Area | Current position | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| API conformance | Khronos-conformant Vulkan 1.4 | Conformance applies to the listed KosmicKrisp implementation |
| Hardware | Apple silicon, M1 and later | Intel Macs are not supported by KosmicKrisp |
| Operating system | macOS 26 or later | Metal 4 is required |
| Distribution | Vulkan SDK and Mesa | KosmicKrisp is not an Apple-supplied system driver |
| Translation path | Vulkan over Metal 4 | Applications still execute through Apple's Metal graphics stack |
The September Vulkan SDK makes the new conformance usable
Vulkan SDK 1.4.363.0 includes the conformant KosmicKrisp ICD on macOS. LunarG says developers can keep a Vulkan 1.4 source path across Windows, Linux, Android and supported Macs while using familiar Vulkan validation, capture and configuration tooling.
The SDK also adds KosmicKrisp performance and memory work, Window Server crash fixes and Metal-object support in VK_EXT_debug_utils. Depth-bounds support is available on Apple M5 hardware and later, while several additional Vulkan extensions are included in this SDK generation.
LunarG says performance has tripled since Vulkan 1.3 conformance
LunarG says KosmicKrisp performance has tripled since the driver achieved Vulkan 1.3 conformance. That is a project-level vendor claim rather than an independent Core Tech Tips benchmark, and it should not be interpreted as every Vulkan game or application running three times faster.
Recent XDC 2026 material also shows the driver moving closer to native Metal performance in tested workloads. Exact overhead remains workload-dependent because KosmicKrisp translates Vulkan behavior onto Metal rather than replacing Apple's native graphics API.
MoltenVK still has a role on older and mixed Mac fleets
LunarG positions KosmicKrisp as the conformant Mesa path for current Apple silicon, while MoltenVK remains available for Intel Macs and older operating systems. Developers shipping across mixed Mac fleets can therefore retain MoltenVK where KosmicKrisp's Apple-silicon and macOS-version requirements are not met.
For developers already maintaining Vulkan renderers on PC, the practical significance is reduced platform divergence: a current Apple-silicon Mac can now expose a conformant Vulkan 1.4 ICD with standard Vulkan tooling. Whether that is preferable to a native Metal renderer still depends on an application's performance targets, feature needs and supported Mac range.
