HP is pushing unified memory far beyond a typical workstation laptop
HP has announced the ZBook Ultra G3a 16, a mobile workstation built around AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO 400-series processors and an unusually large unified-memory pool. The top configuration reaches 192GB of LPDDR5X system memory, with HP allowing as much as 160GB of that pool to be assigned as graphics memory through the BIOS or its software interface.
That memory architecture is the headline feature because it changes the size of workloads the integrated Radeon graphics can hold locally. HP says the machine can run language models up to 300 billion parameters, although actual model compatibility and performance depend on quantization, software, configuration and workload. That 300B figure is an HP and AMD capability claim, not an independent Core Tech Tips benchmark.

160GB of graphics-addressable memory is the more consequential number
A conventional mobile workstation normally splits system RAM and discrete-GPU VRAM into separate fixed pools. The ZBook Ultra G3a instead uses AMD’s integrated Radeon graphics with unified memory, so HP can expose a much larger portion of the installed memory to GPU-heavy workloads. On the 192GB configuration, up to 160GB can be assigned for graphics use.
Capacity and speed should not be conflated. A large unified pool can make it possible to load models or datasets that simply do not fit in a smaller discrete GPU framebuffer, but it does not establish that the integrated GPU will execute those workloads faster than a discrete professional GPU. HP’s own documentation also says memory speed varies by capacity: configurations up to 64GB can reach 8,533 MT/s, while the 128GB and 192GB options run at up to 8,000 MT/s.
The chassis is designed to sustain more power than the previous ZBook Ultra
HP says the new 16-inch chassis can sustain up to a 100W TDP, compared with a 55W maximum for the earlier ZBook Ultra G1a. The company attributes that increase to a larger vapor chamber, redesigned mid-mounted fans and BIOS-level power distribution. HP describes the change as an 81.8% increase in maximum TDP; that percentage is a comparison of the two stated power limits, not an 81.8% guarantee for application performance.
Despite the higher power ceiling, HP lists the system as starting at 4.2 pounds and 17.9 mm thick. Display choices include a 2.8K OLED panel at up to 120Hz and a 4K 120Hz DreamColor option. Connectivity includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, another USB-C port, HDMI 2.1, USB-A, Wi-Fi 7 and optional 5G.
Perplexity Portable Computer is part of HP’s local-AI pitch
HP is also tying the workstation to Perplexity Portable Computer, the local-agent system that recently expanded to compatible Windows RTX PCs. On the ZBook, HP and Perplexity are positioning local models and agents as part of professional workflows rather than as a standalone chat interface, including an MCP connector for Autodesk Revit and HP-specific task skills.
That does not mean every Perplexity task remains offline. HP and Perplexity describe a hybrid model in which work can start locally and the user can choose to involve a cloud model when a step needs it. The distinction matters for buyers evaluating the workstation specifically for privacy or cloud-cost reasons: local hardware creates the option to keep suitable workloads on-device, not a guarantee that every connected workflow is local.
October availability leaves price as the major missing piece
HP expects the ZBook Ultra G3a 16 to become available in October 2026 and says pricing will be provided closer to availability. That missing number is important because the 192GB configuration is the version that makes the machine unusual; lower-memory configurations do not offer the same model-capacity advantage.
For now, the ZBook Ultra G3a is best understood as a capacity-focused mobile workstation. Its most interesting technical proposition is not an NPU TOPS figure but the ability to expose as much as 160GB of a 192GB unified-memory pool to graphics and local-AI workloads in a laptop-sized system. Independent testing will still be needed to establish how quickly the shipping hardware runs large models and professional applications at its 100W power ceiling.
