GPD WIN 5 Adds Ryzen AI Max+ 388 Without Cutting the Radeon 8060S
GPD has added a WIN 5 configuration with the 8-core Ryzen AI Max+ 388 while retaining the 40-CU Radeon 8060S integrated GPU used by the higher-end Ryzen AI Max+ 395.

The new WIN 5 cuts CPU cores, not the integrated GPU
GPD has added a Ryzen AI Max+ 388 configuration to the WIN 5 handheld PC. The important hardware choice is not simply that the processor sits below the Ryzen AI Max+ 395: AMD specifies the 388 with eight Zen 5 CPU cores and 16 threads while retaining Radeon 8060S graphics with all 40 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units.
That gives the WIN 5 a different middle option from the Ryzen AI Max 385. AMD lists the 385 with Radeon 8050S graphics and 32 Compute Units, while both the Max+ 388 and Max+ 395 carry the 40-CU Radeon 8060S. For a handheld whose main workload is gaming, that distinction is more informative than the processor name alone.

Why the 388 is an unusual fit for a gaming handheld
The Ryzen AI Max+ 388 preserves the same named integrated GPU, Compute Unit count and maximum graphics clock as the 395 while halving the CPU core and thread counts. AMD also specifies 40 MB of total cache for the 388 versus 80 MB for the 395. Both chips have a configurable 45-120 W TDP range, but that platform range does not mean the WIN 5 will sustain identical CPU or GPU power in every mode.
On paper, the configuration therefore removes CPU resources without also stepping down to the 32-CU GPU used by the Max 385. That can make the 388 particularly relevant to gaming-focused buyers who want the full Radeon 8060S configuration but do not need 16 CPU cores. It does not establish that gaming performance will equal the 395: game behavior, system power limits, cooling, memory configuration and CPU demand still affect real performance.
The announced configuration starts with 32 GB and a 1 TB SSD
GPD is offering the newly announced Ryzen AI Max+ 388 WIN 5 configuration with 32 GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory and a 1 TB SSD. VideoCardz reports a $1,722 price for that configuration and says GPD expects shipments at the end of September. The report also notes that GPD corrected its original US shipping wording: a $30 charge applies for its duty-paid US delivery service.
Those commercial details are date-sensitive and can vary by region, campaign or reseller, so they should not be treated as a permanent global retail price. The durable part of the announcement is the new processor choice: WIN 5 buyers can now pair an eight-core CPU with the full 40-CU Radeon 8060S instead of moving to the 16-core Max+ 395 to get that GPU configuration.
