Microsoft Confirms Excel Paste Failure After September Update

Microsoft has acknowledged a paste regression affecting Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019 and Excel 2016. When the issue occurs, copied content is not inserted: the source remains selected, the destination is unchanged, and Excel may provide no error message or audible warning that the paste failed.

The problem is documented on Microsoft’s support page for the September 8, 2026 Excel 2016 security update KB5002914 and on a separate known-issues page updated September 16. Reports of broken copy-and-paste behavior appeared shortly after the September Office security release, but Microsoft’s own documentation is now the important part: the failure is no longer only a community-reported symptom.

Microsoft says affected users can try Paste Special instead of the normal paste operation. The documented alternatives include Formulas, Formulas and Number Formatting, Values, Values and Number Formatting, and Paste Link. That can keep some workflows moving, but these options are not interchangeable with a normal paste because each preserves a different subset of the source cell’s content and formatting.

Microsoft currently lists the issue as under investigation and has not published a permanent-fix date. That makes the workaround useful for users who can adapt their workflow, while organizations that depend on exact workbook behavior still need to test the affected Office builds rather than assuming every form of paste behaves normally.

Microsoft notes that the KB5002914 package on its Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer, or MSI, edition of Office 2016 and does not apply to Office 2016 Click-to-Run installations such as Microsoft 365 Home. At the same time, Microsoft’s known-issues page names Excel 2024, 2021, 2019 and 2016 as affected products, so readers should distinguish the specific KB package from the broader Excel regression instead of assuming every Office installation receives updates in the same way.

That distinction also explains why advice copied from one affected PC may not map cleanly to another. Office servicing differs between MSI and Click-to-Run deployments, and Microsoft’s current public guidance focuses on the symptom and Paste Special workaround rather than presenting one universal package-removal procedure for every supported Excel edition.

Calling it simply a Windows 11 bug would be misleading because Microsoft documents the failure against Excel versions and Office servicing rather than a single Windows 11 build.

For PC users, the practical takeaway is narrower: if Excel suddenly keeps the copied source selected while the destination remains unchanged, check the Office update state and Microsoft’s current known-issue guidance before spending time troubleshooting the Windows clipboard itself. A silent failure inside Excel can look like a generic clipboard problem even when copying and pasting elsewhere in Windows still works.
