Radeon RX 9050 4GB Falls 27% Behind the 8GB Card in New Testing
New independent testing shows AMD’s OEM-only Radeon RX 9050 4GB trailing the 8GB model by 27% on average, with half the memory bandwidth and Infinity Cache explaining why this is more than a VRAM-capacity cut.

The 4GB RX 9050 is not simply the same GPU with less VRAM
Independent testing of AMD’s Radeon RX 9050 4GB has exposed a much larger performance gap than the shared product name suggests. Hardware Unboxed tested the OEM-only 4GB card against the 8GB RX 9050 across 18 games at 1080p and found the 8GB model averaged 107 FPS versus 78 FPS for the 4GB card at the tested Low preset — a 37% higher frame rate for the 8GB model, or about a 27% deficit when the 4GB card is measured against it.
The result is not evidence that VRAM capacity alone creates the entire gap. AMD’s own specifications show that the 4GB version also cuts the memory interface from 128-bit to 64-bit, halves peak memory bandwidth from 288 GB/s to 144 GB/s, and reduces Infinity Cache from 32 MB to 16 MB. Both versions retain 1,024 Stream Processors and memory rated up to 18 Gbps, making the memory subsystem the defining architectural difference between the two official configurations.

The 18-game average shows the cut even at 1080p Low
VideoCardz reports Hardware Unboxed’s 18-game average at 1080p Low as 78 FPS with 55 FPS 1% lows on the 4GB card, compared with 107 FPS and 78 FPS 1% lows on the 8GB version. At the lowest tested settings, the same comparison was 111 versus 147 FPS. Those aggregate results matter because reducing graphics settings normally lowers VRAM pressure, yet a large gap remains.
That behavior is consistent with the specifications: the 4GB card has not only half the capacity but half the peak bandwidth and half the Infinity Cache. A game that fits inside 4GB can therefore still encounter a substantially narrower memory path. Conversely, individual games that exceed the available VRAM can add another penalty through asset eviction and transfers, so the size of the gap should be expected to vary by title and settings.
OEM buyers need to check the exact RX 9050 configuration
The naming makes the distinction especially relevant to prebuilt-PC buyers. AMD publishes separate official specification pages for the 4GB and 8GB RX 9050, while current reporting identifies the 4GB configuration as an OEM product found inside complete systems rather than a normal standalone retail card. Toasty Bros also found an XFX 4GB board in a CyberPowerPC system, showing that the cut-down configuration is not limited to one board partner.
A listing that says only “Radeon RX 9050” therefore leaves out information that can materially change gaming performance. Checking the VRAM capacity is the fastest discriminator, but in this case it also identifies a different memory bus and cache configuration. Buyers comparing prebuilts should treat the 4GB and 8GB RX 9050 as meaningfully different performance tiers despite the shared GPU name.
The surrounding prebuilt can widen the problem
The OEM context adds another variable. Toasty Bros’ CyberPowerPC system paired its RX 9050 4GB with a Ryzen 5 5500 and 8GB of single-channel DDR4. Moving the card to a newer Ryzen 5 9600X platform with 32GB of DDR5 improved results in several tests, while adding a second DDR4 module also reduced some system-side bottlenecks.
That does not invalidate the controlled GPU comparison, but it reinforces the practical buying lesson: entry-level prebuilts can stack several bandwidth and memory constraints at once. The new RX 9050 testing is useful precisely because it separates the card’s own unusually narrow memory configuration from the additional compromises that may appear in the systems where the 4GB version is sold.
