Linux now recognizes Gorgon Halo's NPU

AMD's upcoming Gorgon Halo platform has received the small but essential Linux driver change needed for its NPU to be recognized by the AMDXDNA accelerator driver. The patch adds AIE2 revision 9, identified as GRGH and named NPU Gorgon Halo, to the driver's supported revision table.

The change was posted by AMD engineer Lizhi Hou and reviewed by AMD's Mario Limonciello. On September 29, Hou confirmed that the second revision of the patch had been applied to drm-misc-next, putting it on the path toward the Linux 7.4 merge window.

Why such a small patch is enough

The patch does not introduce a new NPU architecture or a large driver subsystem. Instead, it teaches the existing AIE2 path to recognize revision 9 and associates that revision with Gorgon Halo. Phoronix notes that the hardware is sufficiently aligned with the AIE2 support already used for Strix Point, Strix Halo and Gorgon Point that no broader driver changes are required for this enablement.

That distinction matters: this is hardware-recognition enablement, not evidence of higher AI throughput, lower latency or broader application compatibility. Actual Gorgon Halo NPU performance and software behavior will still need to be measured on shipping systems.

The timing matters for Ryzen AI Max 400 systems

Gorgon Halo is associated with AMD's Ryzen AI Max 400 family, making this patch part of the Linux bring-up needed around new systems using the platform. For Linux users interested in local AI workloads, having the NPU recognized by AMDXDNA is a prerequisite for using that accelerator through the kernel driver stack.

The immediate takeaway is therefore compatibility rather than speed: upstream Linux is gaining the identifier needed to expose the Gorgon Halo NPU through the existing AMD accelerator driver path, while real-world NPU application support and performance remain separate questions.
