Start with Microsoft’s eligibility result

Run Microsoft PC Health Check on the Windows 10 PC before buying replacement parts. Microsoft also exposes upgrade eligibility through Windows Update for ordinary unmanaged PCs. This distinguishes a real failed requirement from guesswork based on the age of the machine.

If the checker identifies TPM or Secure Boot, investigate whether the required capability already exists but is disabled before assuming the motherboard must be replaced. If it identifies the processor, remember that Microsoft’s current requirement includes appearing on its approved CPU list; meeting only the 1 GHz and two-core numbers is not sufficient.

TPM 2.0 can be firmware-based

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, but that does not mean every compatible PC needs a separately purchased plug-in TPM module. TPM capability can be implemented in platform firmware. The exact firmware setting name and support path depend on the motherboard or OEM system, so use the manufacturer documentation for the specific model.

Do not buy a random TPM module solely because a checker reports TPM as disabled. Discrete TPM headers and modules are not universally interchangeable, and a compatible firmware TPM may already satisfy the platform requirement.

CPU eligibility is more specific than “64-bit and fast enough”

Microsoft’s current consumer requirements say the processor must be 1 GHz or faster with two or more cores and appear on Microsoft’s approved CPU list. That list requirement is why an older processor can exceed the simple clock/core thresholds yet still fail official Windows 11 eligibility.

If the CPU is the blocking component, a CPU-only replacement is possible only when the motherboard, socket, chipset, BIOS/UEFI, memory and power/cooling path support an eligible replacement. Otherwise the practical upgrade can become a platform change rather than a single-part swap.

  • Run PC Health Check and record each failed requirement.
  • Check the exact OEM or motherboard firmware documentation for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot capability.
  • Verify the installed CPU against Microsoft’s current supported-processor documentation.
  • Confirm RAM, storage and graphics requirements separately.
  • If hardware must change, validate CPU/motherboard/RAM/cooling compatibility before buying.
  • After changes, rerun the eligibility check and wait for Windows Update to report readiness rather than assuming the machine is ready from firmware settings alone.
