First prove the problem is the Bluetooth path

A cursor that feels uneven does not automatically mean Bluetooth is failing. Start by separating a Bluetooth-link problem from low frame rate, a busy application, a dirty sensor, a poor tracking surface, or a mouse that behaves the same way on every connection mode. If the mouse supports both Bluetooth and a dedicated USB receiver or wired mode, comparing those modes on the same PC is especially useful: smooth behavior outside Bluetooth narrows the fault toward the Bluetooth radio, host adapter, driver, pairing state, or interference path.

Also note whether the mouse merely feels delayed, visibly skips, or actually disconnects and reconnects in Windows. Those symptoms can share causes, but a real connection drop gives stronger evidence for the radio, power, pairing, or driver branches than a vague complaint that the pointer feels slow.

Check battery, distance, and the physical radio environment before changing Windows

Microsoft recommends confirming that a problematic Bluetooth accessory is charged or has fresh batteries and is within range. Test close to the PC with a known-good battery state before making software changes. If that fixes the symptom, keep the diagnosis at the device/radio layer rather than reinstalling drivers that were already working.

Pay particular attention to nearby USB 3.x devices. Microsoft explicitly warns that an unresponsive or sluggish Bluetooth device can be affected by an unshielded USB device connected to a USB 3.0 port. That does not mean every USB 3.x device causes interference, but it makes a simple placement test worthwhile: temporarily move nearby USB devices, hubs, storage, or radio adapters away from the Bluetooth antenna and retest the same mouse movement.

Use this diagnostic order

  1. Confirm the symptom is specific to Bluetooth rather than the mouse sensor, tracking surface, application, or whole-PC performance.
  2. Charge the mouse or install a known-good battery, move it close to the PC, and retest.
  3. Temporarily move nearby USB 3.x devices, hubs, storage, and other radios away from the Bluetooth adapter or antenna.
  4. Turn Bluetooth off and back on; if the connection remains abnormal, remove the mouse and pair it again.
  5. Run the Windows 11 Bluetooth troubleshooter and install applicable Windows and OEM Bluetooth updates.
  6. If disconnects persist, inspect the Bluetooth device or adapter power-management setting where Windows exposes it.
  7. Update, reinstall, or—when the timing clearly points to a recent update—roll back the supported Bluetooth adapter driver.
  8. Cross-test the mouse on another host or another Bluetooth mouse on this PC before concluding that either piece of hardware is defective.

Reset the connection state without jumping straight to a driver reinstall

If battery, range, and interference tests do not explain the issue, toggle Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. Microsoft also recommends removing and re-adding a Bluetooth device when connection state is unreliable. Put the mouse into its manufacturer-documented pairing mode, remove the existing Windows entry under Settings > Bluetooth & devices, and pair it again.

This is more useful than repeatedly clicking Connect on a stale device relationship because it rebuilds the pairing state. Retest immediately afterward before changing anything else. If the same mouse remains unstable but other Bluetooth peripherals are solid, the evidence stays device-specific; if several Bluetooth peripherals misbehave on the same PC, the common adapter, antenna, driver, or Windows Bluetooth path becomes more important.

Treat power management as a disconnect-specific branch, not a universal latency tweak

For Bluetooth devices that repeatedly disconnect, Microsoft documents a Device Manager power-management check: where the Power Management tab is available, clear “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” and retest. This branch makes the most sense when the symptom is an actual connection drop, especially around idle periods or power-state transitions.

Do not disable unrelated power-saving settings across the whole PC in the hope of reducing mouse latency. Windows and device-driver interfaces vary by adapter, and some systems do not expose the same checkbox. Change only the relevant documented setting when it exists, then verify whether the disconnect pattern actually changes.

Update the Bluetooth adapter driver when the evidence points to the host

Microsoft identifies outdated or incompatible Bluetooth drivers as a common source of connection problems. Windows 11 can search for a driver through Device Manager and Windows Update, while the PC or motherboard manufacturer may provide a newer supported Bluetooth package for the exact system. Prefer those sources over generic third-party driver-updater utilities.

If updating does not help, Microsoft documents uninstalling the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can reinstall it. A rollback is also reasonable when Bluetooth was stable until a specific recent driver change and the Roll Back Driver option is available. Preserve that timing as evidence: reinstalling every driver on the machine at once makes it harder to learn what fixed the fault.

Do not confuse Bluetooth behavior with a gaming-mouse polling-rate specification

A dual-mode gaming mouse may publish very different capabilities for Bluetooth and its proprietary 2.4 GHz receiver. A high polling-rate specification for a dedicated receiver or wired mode does not automatically apply to Bluetooth. If the mouse is consistently responsive but Bluetooth simply feels less immediate than its gaming receiver, that may be a connection-mode characteristic rather than an intermittent Windows fault.

Troubleshooting should therefore focus on regressions and abnormal behavior: new stutter, obvious skips, connection drops, or a mouse that previously worked normally on the same Bluetooth path. Do not install polling-rate hacks or change undocumented registry values as a generic fix for a Bluetooth connection problem.

Cross-test before replacing the mouse or Bluetooth adapter

The strongest final test is substitution. Pair the affected mouse with another compatible PC if possible, or pair another known-good Bluetooth mouse with the original PC. If several devices fail only on one computer, investigate that computer’s adapter, antenna placement, USB interference, driver, and Windows state. If one mouse fails across multiple hosts while other mice remain stable, the mouse itself becomes more credible as the common factor.

Keep the conclusion proportional to the evidence. A single brief disconnect does not prove failing hardware, and a driver update that happens near the same date as a problem is not automatically the cause. Reproduce the same symptom after each isolated change so the fix is based on a pattern rather than coincidence.
