Test the graphics path and display mode before reinstalling anything
Microsoft documents Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B as a shortcut that can wake a blank or black screen by resetting the graphics-driver path. A beep or visible flicker is useful evidence that Windows is responding, but temporary recovery does not prove which driver, application, or display state caused the failure.
A wrong multi-monitor output can also make a healthy signed-in desktop appear absent. Microsoft recommends Windows + P to cycle display modes during blank-screen troubleshooting. If you recently docked the PC, connected a television, changed DisplayPort or HDMI cabling, or removed a second monitor, simplify the display setup and retest. Safe Mode is an isolation test, not proof that the graphics card is bad
If normal sign-in repeatedly produces a black desktop and the basic shell/display tests do not hold, Windows Recovery Environment can open Startup Settings and boot Safe Mode. Microsoft describes Safe Mode as a limited state using essential files, services, and drivers. If the symptom disappears there, that narrows the investigation toward something loaded in the normal environment; it does not by itself identify one driver or application.
From a working Safe Mode session, inspect recent display-driver or software changes and make one reversible change at a time. Then boot normally and reproduce the same sign-in test. Avoid using Safe Mode as an excuse for broad registry edits, disabling unrelated services, or deleting driver packages without evidence.
Treat Windows Recovery Environment as an escalation path and protect the BitLocker boundary
Windows RE provides Startup Settings, System Restore, Startup Repair, update-removal options, and other recovery tools. For a machine that reaches sign-in and only then loses the desktop, prefer the least destructive option that matches the evidence. Startup Repair is primarily intended for problems that prevent Windows from starting, so it is not the first choice when the signed-in session is clearly running.
Microsoft warns that encrypted devices can require a BitLocker recovery key for recovery operations. Before deliberately entering advanced recovery or changing startup state, make sure you can obtain the correct key if prompted. Microsoft cannot recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. Do not jump to Reset this PC or a reinstall while the problem is still a recoverable shell, display-mode, driver, or startup-software fault.
Use recovery history when the black screen began immediately after a known system change
When the symptom starts directly after a Windows update, driver change, or other recent system modification and simpler checks fail, Windows recovery options can provide a more targeted rollback. Recovery can change applications, drivers, settings, or recent system state depending on the selected option. A desktop that returns after rollback establishes useful timing evidence, but it still does not justify a universal claim about the failed component.
