The 9100 PRO is Samsung’s PCIe 5.0 x4 client NVMe SSD family

Samsung specifies the 9100 PRO as an M.2 2280 client SSD using a PCIe 5.0 x4 host interface and the NVMe 2.0 protocol. Samsung’s current data sheet lists 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, and 8 TB capacities and identifies the storage as Samsung V-NAND TLC with an in-house Samsung controller.

Those facts describe the drive family rather than the performance of every PC that can accept an M.2 SSD. A system needs an appropriately wired M.2 slot to expose the drive’s full PCIe 5.0 x4 link capability. Samsung also states that the 9100 PRO is backward compatible with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 3.0 x4, so installation in an older compatible link does not turn that slot into PCIe 5.0.

Rated throughput varies by capacity and is not a universal real-world speed

Samsung’s data sheet rates the 1 TB model for up to 14,700 MB/s sequential reads and 13,300 MB/s sequential writes. The 2 TB model keeps the 14,700 MB/s read rating and raises the write rating to 13,400 MB/s, while the 4 TB model is rated up to 14,800 MB/s read and 13,400 MB/s write. The current data sheet prints the same 14,800/13,400 MB/s figures for 8 TB but marks those entries as TBD, so this reference does not silently present them as finalized ratings.

Samsung explicitly qualifies its performance figures. The data-sheet measurements use a specified test platform and software, and Samsung says results can vary with firmware, system hardware, and configuration. Sequential and random write figures are also measured with Intelligent TurboWrite active. These are therefore manufacturer-rated test results, not independent Core Tech Tips benchmarks and not guaranteed transfer rates for every workload.

Samsung pairs TLC V-NAND with capacity-scaled LPDDR4X cache

Across the family, Samsung identifies the flash as Samsung V-NAND TLC and the controller only as a Samsung in-house controller in the public data sheet. The listed LPDDR4X cache scales with capacity: 1 GB on the 1 TB drive, 2 GB on 2 TB, 4 GB on 4 TB, and 8 GB on 8 TB.

The presence of dedicated LPDDR4X cache is a hardware specification, not evidence of a fixed application-performance advantage over another SSD. Controller firmware, NAND behavior, queue depth, access pattern, host caching, thermal conditions, free capacity, and workload duration all affect observed storage performance.

The bare drive is M.2 2280, while Samsung also sells heatsink versions

Samsung lists the non-heatsink 9100 PRO as M.2 2280. Its data sheet gives maximum dimensions of 80.15 × 22.15 × 2.38 mm for the 1 TB through 4 TB versions and a thicker maximum of 80.15 × 22.15 × 3.88 mm for the 8 TB model. Samsung separately documents heatsink variants, which are wider and substantially thicker than the bare M.2 board.

That distinction matters in compact PCs, laptops, motherboard M.2 covers, and consoles. M.2 2280 describes the board form factor; it does not guarantee that a particular factory heatsink assembly fits under another device’s cover or inside every host. Check the host’s physical clearance and whether its own M.2 thermal solution is intended to be used with a bare drive before installation.

Use Samsung’s ratings as product specifications, not as a buying verdict

The durable reference points are straightforward: PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0, M.2 2280, Samsung TLC V-NAND, a Samsung in-house controller, dedicated LPDDR4X cache, and capacity-specific manufacturer performance ratings. Samsung’s product pages also advertise its Magician software for firmware, health, and drive-management functions.

This page intentionally does not infer game-loading gains, Windows responsiveness, sustained-write behavior outside Samsung’s documented conditions, temperatures, power efficiency, street price, availability, reliability, or a ranking against another SSD. Those questions require controlled measurements or current commercial data rather than extrapolation from a specification sheet.
