RTX 5090 is the Blackwell-generation GeForce flagship, and this page is a specification reference

NVIDIA identifies the GeForce RTX 5090 as a Blackwell-generation GeForce GPU. The official specification table lists 21,760 CUDA cores, fifth-generation Tensor Cores, fourth-generation Ray Tracing Cores, a 2.41 GHz boost clock, and a 2.01 GHz base clock for the Founders Edition/reference implementation. These are vendor specifications, not Core Tech Tips benchmark measurements.

Use this page to establish what the NVIDIA reference design officially supports before checking a case, power supply, motherboard, cable, or display. Add-in-card partners can change clocks, cooler dimensions, slot thickness, power implementation, and other board details, so a partner RTX 5090 must still be checked against that manufacturer’s exact shipping specification.

The official memory configuration is 32 GB of GDDR7 on a 512-bit interface

NVIDIA specifies 32 GB of GDDR7 memory and a 512-bit memory interface for the GeForce RTX 5090. The official specification table also lists a 28 Gbps memory data rate. Those facts describe the GPU/reference memory configuration; they do not by themselves establish application performance, usable working-set requirements, or a benchmark advantage over another GPU.

VRAM capacity is therefore useful as a hard product fact, but “32 GB” should not be turned into a universal statement about which games, AI workloads, renderers, or resolutions need that amount. Workload behavior and software support remain separate questions that require their own evidence.

PCI Express Gen 5 support does not make an older PCIe slot automatically incompatible

NVIDIA lists PCI Express Gen 5 support for the RTX 5090. PCIe is designed around negotiated link compatibility, so the interface generation is not a requirement that every host motherboard must expose a Gen 5 graphics slot simply for the card to function. Exact motherboard firmware, slot wiring, physical clearance, power delivery, and platform behavior still need to be checked.

Do not infer a universal performance penalty from running the card on an older negotiated PCIe generation without workload-specific measurements. For the general compatibility workflow, use the GPU Compatibility and PCIe Compatibility guides; this reference only establishes the RTX 5090’s documented interface capability.

Founders Edition exposes three DisplayPort 2.1b outputs with UHBR20 and one HDMI 2.1b output

NVIDIA specifies three DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI output on the Founders Edition/reference design. Its DisplayPort implementation is DisplayPort 2.1b with UHBR20. The HDMI output is specified as HDMI 2.1b. NVIDIA lists support for up to four monitors, subject to the documented mode and bandwidth combinations.

The headline maximum digital-resolution entry is up to 4K at 480 Hz or 8K at 165 Hz with Display Stream Compression. NVIDIA’s footnotes make the path important: DisplayPort 2.1b with DSC is documented up to 4K 480 Hz or 8K 165 Hz, while HDMI 2.1b with DSC is documented up to 4K 480 Hz or 8K 120 Hz. These are interface capabilities, not a claim that a game will render at those frame rates.

575 W TGP and NVIDIA system-power guidance are different numbers with different meanings

NVIDIA lists 575 W Total Graphics Power for the RTX 5090 reference specification. TGP describes the graphics-card power specification; it is not measured whole-system wall consumption. NVIDIA’s main specification table currently lists 1000 W required system power and notes that the minimum is based on a system configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X, while also warning that requirements can differ by system configuration.

NVIDIA’s Founders Edition preparation section separately shows an 850 W minimum and says a higher rating may be required depending on the system. Because NVIDIA itself presents these values in different contexts, do not collapse them into one universal PSU rule. Check the exact PSU, CPU and rest of the system, transient/load capability, connectors, and the current NVIDIA/PSU-vendor guidance rather than treating wattage alone as compatibility.

Power-cable requirements depend on the documented Founders Edition connection method

The current NVIDIA specification table lists either four PCIe 8-pin cables through the included adapter or one 600 W PCIe Gen 5 cable as supplementary-power options. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition installation guidance additionally documents operation with three or four PCIe 8-pin cables into its included adapter, or one 450 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 power cable. Follow the current installation instructions supplied for the exact card and PSU rather than mixing modular PSU cables or assuming every physically similar connector is interchangeable.

A power connector fitting mechanically does not establish that the PSU, cable, adapter, or wiring arrangement is approved for the card. Never substitute modular PSU cables from another PSU model unless the PSU manufacturer explicitly documents compatibility. Founders Edition dimensions are not universal RTX 5090 dimensions

NVIDIA’s specification table lists the Founders Edition at 304 mm long, 137 mm wide, and 2-slot. Its separate system-preparation diagram asks builders to reserve case clearance of 304 × 137 × 61 mm, effectively planning a three-slot physical envelope, and to allow an additional 36 mm for power-cable clearance. Those two descriptions serve different purposes: nominal card specification versus installation clearance.

NVIDIA explicitly says graphics-card specifications vary by add-in-card manufacturer. A partner RTX 5090 can therefore be longer, thicker, wider, or use a different cooler and connector position. Check the exact board-partner model against the case’s GPU-length, expansion-slot, side-panel, radiator/fan, and cable-bend clearances before purchase or installation.

Use a model-specific compatibility checklist instead of treating “RTX 5090” as one physical board

For a Founders Edition build, verify: 1) the motherboard has an appropriate physical PCIe graphics slot and compatible firmware; 2) the case has the required card and cable clearance; 3) the PSU has sufficient system capacity and an NVIDIA/PSU-vendor-supported connection method; 4) the exact power cable or adapter arrangement follows current instructions; 5) the intended monitor path matches the card’s DP 2.1b UHBR20 or HDMI 2.1b capability; and 6) airflow is not obstructed around the card.

For any partner card, repeat the same workflow using that partner model’s dimensions, clocks, power limit, connectors, and cooler specification instead of copying Founders Edition values. This reference intentionally does not provide a price, availability claim, benchmark result, noise/thermal measurement, review score, or buying recommendation because those are separate evidence questions.
